Jinbukan Kobudo
Till recently, this lesser known cousin of Karate-do was seldom practiced by those outside of Okinawan budo schools. Now, the martial arts world has renewed interest in this classical budo form. This martial art is a study of Okinawa's combat weaponry; most of which were derived from fishing and farming tools.
Founded by the late Katsuyoshi Kanei Sensei, the Jinbukan system of Kobudo incorporates two of the major Kobudo styles on the island of Okinawa - the Shinken Taira and Matayoshi styles. Shinken Taira Kobudo has the greater contribution in the Jinbukan system. Today, it is his son, Hitoshi Kanei Sensei, who heads the dojo, keeping his father's philosophy and training methodology alive.
Weapons include the well-known bo (or 6-foot staff), nunchaku (popularized on the big screen by martial arts legend Bruce Lee), tonfa (weapon of choice in many law enforcement systems), sai (introduced to the masses by Marvel Comics superhero Elektra), and many other wooden and metal weapons. It is one of the few Okinawan budo schools that still practices the art of the Okinawan jo (4-foot staff), which is more commonly associated with Japanese martial arts like Aikido.
